> Our 2-day Ninh Binh itinerary: getting there from Sapa or Hanoi, Trang An Route 2, Mua Cave, the lotus season, Hoa Lu old town, where to stay, and why you shouldn't visit in June.

A thousand years ago, Ninh Binh was the capital of Vietnam, and it's easy to see why it's called "Ha Long Bay on land": limestone mountains, rivers and caves everywhere. It's stunning. But our honest verdict: **the heat ruined it for us.** Come, just come in the right season.

## How to get there

Ninh Binh connects easily to **Sapa, Hanoi and Da Nang** by bus or train. From Hanoi it's about a 2-hour drive by Grab or tour bus.

We came from Sapa on the **HK Bus Line** sleeper bus, about 7 hours. It was very clean, with a massage seat, TV, headphones, curtains and water. **Book a single cabin, not a double**, and take a **lower berth** because the mountain road twists a lot.

## Where to stay

Skip the big hotels and pick a small homestay or retreat. We tried two:

- **AN Retreats**: every room has a **private plunge pool**, which is a lifesaver in the heat.
- **A simple homestay and café across the road**: very economical, the same great location and lovely people.

Many places lend **free bicycles**. Ninh Binh is small enough to explore by cycle.

## Day 1: Trang An boat ride

A UNESCO site where 250 million years of geology meet Vietnamese history. We booked tickets on Klook (about **₹1,000 per person**), but you can also buy them at the gate.

There are **three routes**. We took **Route 2**, which covers most of the caves and temples. It takes about **2 hours** by rowing boat, and if you're four people you get a boat to yourselves. Some caves are long and very low, which is a bit scary and very cool.

Buy a local conical hat at the entrance. You'll need the shade.

Trang An is more scenic than Tam Coc, so if you only do one boat ride, make it this one.

## Evening: Hoa Lu Old Town

A small pagoda, a night market and shops in a cultural replica of the ancient capital. It's peaceful and lovely around **5:30–6 pm**. Eat dinner at the night market.

## Day 2: Mua Cave viewpoint

Climb the steps to the dragon on top for a **360° view** of Ninh Binh.

- **Don't climb at midday.** We did, and it nearly finished us. Go early morning or late afternoon, and carry lots of water or an energy drink.
- **Carry Vietnamese dong in cash.** They didn't take cards, and the exchange rate they offered for our dollars was terrible (about 24,000 VND to the dollar against roughly 26,000 in the city). **Exchange enough money in Hanoi.**
- Below the cave is the famous **lotus pond** from Instagram. It only blooms for 2–3 months (about May to mid-June).

## If you have more time

- **Hoa Lu Ancient Capital**: about 40 minutes away. We skipped it because of the heat.
- **Bai Dinh Pagoda**: 25–30 km from the centre, 40–45 minutes.

## A Grab tip

If you pay by card in Grab, make sure you get the payment notification. Some drivers will ask for cash too. Show them it's already paid.

## FAQs

**Is a day trip to Ninh Binh from Hanoi enough?**
We'd avoid it. Give Ninh Binh at least two days, because one day goes on travel.

**Which Trang An boat route is best?**
We took Route 2, which covers most of the caves and temples. The ride took about 2 hours.

**When is lotus season in Ninh Binh?**
Roughly May to mid-June, which unfortunately is also the hottest time.
