## A little history
George Town was founded in **1786 by Captain Francis Light** of the British East India Company, the first British settlement in Southeast Asia, and named after **King George III**. It quickly became a strategic trading port between India, China and the Malay states. With migrants from China, India, Europe and the Malay world, it grew into the multicultural city you see today.

## Wander, shop, repeat
- **Street art and photo spots** on every corner.
- **Souvenirs**: magnets, luggage tags, mandala art, coasters and painted tiles. Cheaper than KL.
- **Labubu everywhere**: dolls that start around ₹7,500 in India, plus lots of lookalikes here.
- A **wishing well** where you can make a wish.

## Gelato at a heritage Chinese house
A Taiwanese friend recommended a café in an old **Chinese house**, with a theatre-inspired dessert counter and a lovely old-world feel. The **matcha and local hazelnut gelato** were excellent.

## Little India
Shops with beautiful images of Lakshmi Mata and Hanuman, Indian stores, a **pani puri café**, Malabar restaurants and Rathi silk shops. It's a great stop if you're craving home food.

**Heads-up:** the fish-market area has a strong seafood smell.
