# Sapa Travel Guide: Fansipan, Cat Cat Village, Glass Bridge & What It Costs

> Everything we did in 3 days in Sapa, Vietnam: getting there by sleeper train, Fansipan cable car, Cat Cat Village, Moana Café, Glass Bridge, food and real prices.

Sapa is a hill station in northern Vietnam, and honestly, three days there still felt short. It's slow, green, misty village life rather than city life, so come in that mood. Here's everything we did, what it cost, and what we'd do differently.

## Getting to Sapa

First fly into **Hanoi**. From there you have two options:

- **Overnight sleeper train** (what we did). We booked it well in advance on Klook, and it cost us about **₹4,000 per person**. The cabin came with a small kit: toothbrush, earplugs, water, snacks and wet wipes. The train stops at Lao Cai, about 1.5 hours from Sapa, with plenty of cabs waiting.
- **Bus or limousine van** straight from Hanoi or the airport, about 6 hours.

## Where to stay

Stay in the **town centre, near Sun Plaza**. Everything is walkable from there, including the monorail to the Fansipan cable car. We stayed at **Hotel Pistachio** for about **₹4,500 per room per night**. Check-in is 2 pm everywhere, but they let us use shower rooms by the pool to freshen up after the night train. Small thing, big help.

## Day 1: Fansipan, the roof of Indochina

From **Sun Plaza**, take the iconic **monorail** to the cable car station (there are escalators too; we took the long way round by mistake). The cable car ride is about **20–25 minutes** to the top area, and another short funicular takes you up to the **3,143 m summit**.

We had *zero* visibility at the top (29 May), and it was cold and windy. Then the sun came out for a few minutes, the clouds parted, and it was magical. **Fog or no fog, don't skip it.**

- **The last cable car down is at 4:30 pm.** Be there before.
- **Book tickets a day or two ahead on Klook.** Same-day availability is rare. Code **SUNNSHANT** = 10% off.
- Carry a jacket even in summer.

## Day 2: Cat Cat Village & Moana Café

**Cat Cat Village** gets its name from a French-era waterfall the locals couldn't pronounce. It's a beautiful Hmong village with a waterfall, little cafés, handicraft and cotton-clothes shops, and costume rentals for photos.

- Entry: **150,000 VND per adult**, 70,000 VND per child.
- The full loop took us about **3 hours**. Going down is easy, but the climb back up to the exit is hard work. We took a cab back to the hotel.
- It gets slippery after rain.

In the evening, go to **Moana Café**, Sapa's most photogenic café, with sculptures and photo spots all over the valley view. We planned 30 minutes and stayed two hours until it closed. Entry is **90,000 VND**, including a coffee, tea or Coke. **Go in the afternoon**: evenings mean queues at every photo spot.

## Day 3: Glass Bridge, Heaven's Gate & Silver Waterfall

These three are on the same route, so do them together in one trip.

- **Glass Bridge:** about **500,000 VND per adult** (children over 1.4 m pay adult price). A free shuttle takes you from the ticket counter to the lift entrance, then a lift through a tunnel inside the mountain takes you up. It sways a little and the views are spectacular. There's also a zipline and a giant swing.
- **Heaven's Gate tourist area:** **250,000 VND** entry, with activities extra. An electric buggy takes you between photo stops. One waterfall is a steep hike down and back up, so skip it if your legs are done.
- **Silver Waterfall:** **20,000 VND**, with a lot of steps but a lovely view.

**Book a round-trip cab from your hotel.** Getting a cab back from up there is very hard.

## Food in Sapa

- **Hotpot is a must.** The vegetarian one we had used a mushroom, ginger, herb and turmeric broth with loads of vegetables. **One hotpot feeds 3–4 people**, so don't over-order.
- **Indian food:** there's an Indian restaurant every 700–800 m in the centre. Don't expect home-style taste, but it's there.

## Get a massage

After all the hills, book a **45–60 minute body or foot massage**. It cost about **150,000–200,000 VND**, cheaper than Thailand and clean. Pick one with good Google ratings.

## Leaving Sapa

We took the **HK Bus Line** evening sleeper bus straight to Ninh Binh, with pickup from our hotel. Next: [Ninh Binh in 2 days](https://www.psvlogs.in/blog/ninh-binh-travel-guide).

## FAQs

**How do I get from Hanoi to Sapa?**
By overnight sleeper train to Lao Cai (then about 1.5 hours by cab to Sapa), or by limousine bus or van straight from Hanoi or Hanoi airport in about 6 hours.

**Is Fansipan worth it if it's foggy?**
Yes. We had almost zero visibility at the top and still loved the experience. The fog also clears in short bursts.

**Is Sapa good for vegetarians?**
Yes. Order a vegetarian hotpot, and there's an Indian restaurant roughly every 700–800 m in the town centre.
