Day two in Chiang Mai: a weekend market under coconut palms, a bus ticket for Chiang Rai, and lunch at one of the prettiest cafés we've been to.

The Coconut Market

A village-themed weekend market under coconut trees. It's shady and cooler than outside, with a lovely local feel. It's different from other weekend markets, with stuff you won't find in Bangkok.

  • Handmade goods: wooden serving trays, chopping boards, crochet toys, flowers.
  • Cotton, jute and rattan bags: about 139 baht.
  • Vegetarian pad thai is available, as it is all over Chiang Mai.
  • Fruit: snake fruit (we love it) and avocados, 50 baht for 6+, against ₹100 each back home.
  • Nuts and dried mango: much cheaper than India.
  • Coconut desserts, which are very sweet.

Careful: we saw crocodile-leather wallets. Exotic leather can land you in trouble with Indian customs, so skip them.

Booking the bus to Chiang Rai

Grab works well here (Bolt has fewer cars). We went to Bus Terminal 3 to buy the Green Bus ticket to Chiang Rai.

Money tip: online, a booking site showed 388 baht per adult. At the terminal counter we paid about 196 baht per person. For this route, buy at the terminal. While you're there, check which platform your bus leaves from.

Lunch at Chom Café

About 195 baht by Grab. Chom is a huge garden café with a waterfall, zones and tables, and it's beautiful. Try the longan jelly smoothie (longan is everywhere in Chiang Mai), plus the mushroom dishes and lemon rice. For us, Chom had the best food of the whole Chiang Mai trip.
