A little history
George Town was founded in 1786 by Captain Francis Light of the British East India Company, the first British settlement in Southeast Asia, and named after King George III. It quickly became a strategic trading port between India, China and the Malay states. With migrants from China, India, Europe and the Malay world, it grew into the multicultural city you see today.
Wander, shop, repeat
- Street art and photo spots on every corner.
- Souvenirs: magnets, luggage tags, mandala art, coasters and painted tiles. Cheaper than KL.
- Labubu everywhere: dolls that start around ₹7,500 in India, plus lots of lookalikes here.
- A wishing well where you can make a wish.
Gelato at a heritage Chinese house
A Taiwanese friend recommended a café in an old Chinese house, with a theatre-inspired dessert counter and a lovely old-world feel. The matcha and local hazelnut gelato were excellent.
Little India
Shops with beautiful images of Lakshmi Mata and Hanuman, Indian stores, a pani puri café, Malabar restaurants and Rathi silk shops. It's a great stop if you're craving home food.
Heads-up: the fish-market area has a strong seafood smell.
