Day eight, our last. Hong Kong felt uncomfortable at first, then slowly we fell in love with it. We kept the last day easy.

Sunday in Central

On Sundays, roads in Central close and thousands of Filipino domestic workers spend their one day off together on mats and folding chairs, with home-cooked food and music, right under Chanel, Gucci and Prada. Nobody bothers them; it's their time. It's lovely to see, and a very different Central from the weekday one.

Wong Tai Sin Temple

Take the MTR to Wong Tai Sin. One exit is literally named after the temple. Inside the station is Temple Mall, where we had lunch at a milk café (chicken wings, scallion-oil noodles, scrambled eggs and garlic bread; chicken was the only non-pork option).

The temple, from 1921, is much bigger than we expected, with sections representing the five elements, and rows of fortune tellers. After the buzz of the city, it was suddenly calm.

Shopping stop: Xiaomi store

We bought a cordless hair-straightener brush at a Mi store for HK$299. They have gadgets you don't get in India.

Where to eat in Tsim Sha Tsui

  • Korean BBQ: our last meal was grilled chicken with rice cakes and a Korean lunch box. If you love Korean food in TST, go.
  • Indian food: if local food isn't working for you, there are Indian restaurants like Kailash Parbat right there. You won't struggle for food in TST.

Airport Express from Central

From TST we took the MTR to Central and followed signs to the Airport Express. Buy tickets at the kiosk:

TravellersFare (from Central)
1HK$130
2HK$170
3HK$230

Solo travellers may find it cheaper to take the MTR to Tung Chung and a bus from there. For two or more, the group ticket is good value. There's room for bags, and the ride takes about 20–25 minutes.

Heads-up: Air India didn't offer in-town check-in, so with a late-night flight we waited at the airport for check-in to open.
